High School Teams From South Coast Stranded By Hurricane Sandy Finally Wrapping Up Their Adventures

Posted on Friday, November 2, 2012 11:18am

It’s been quite a week for two high school mock trial teams from the South Coast, who battled it out for the World Championships, but then got stuck in New York because of Hurricane Sandy.

The teams from La Reina High School in Thousand Oaks, and Dos Pueblos High School in Goleta were both supposed to fly home on Monday, after the final day of competition in the Empire City Mock Trial Invitational.

The hurricane grounded all flights, and both teams ended up with extended stays at the Brooklyn Marriott, where they weathered the storm safely.

The La Reina team stayed at the hotel until yesterday, when they lost their rooms in the fully booked hotel. The team chartered a bus and went to the Washington, D.C., where they stayed with friends of one of the coaches. Tonight, they are finally flying home.

The Dos Pueblos team was able to re-book its flight, and returned home yesterday.

The La Reina team defeated Dos Pueblos to win the world mock trial title for the second year in a row.
