Ventura County Supervisors have authorized the hiring of additional jail personnel to help deal with a major increase in inmates.
The Sheriff’s Department has been given approval to hire 17 additional correctional officers to help the county cope with about 250 extra inmates.
The new inmates are the result of a move made by the state last year to shift responsibility for thousands of lower risk inmates from state prisons, to local jurisdictions.
State funding will pay for the 10 civilian correctional officers, and seven sheriff’s deputies being hired.
