DNA evidence has been used to make an arrest in the July, 1980 murder of a teenage girl in Oxnard.
Stacy Knappenberger was beaten, and stabbed in her home on the 5300 block of South J Street. Oxnard Police conducted an extensive investigation, but wern’t able to make an arrest. However, they preserved evidence with DNA on it.
In the year 2000, detectives submitted the DNA evidence to a national database system. In 2010, they got a hit on a man living in Fairfield, Alabama. The Ventura County Cold Case Task Force worked to develop more evidence to link Thomas Young to the more than three decade old crime.
The now 65 year old man was arrested with the help of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department, and is now being held in Birmingham, Alabama pending extradition to California.
