Man Arrested By Santa Barbara Police After They Say He Tried To Extort Money From Elderly Man

Posted on Sunday, September 2, 2012 1:34am

A Santa Barbara man has been arrested for attempted extortion, after detectives say he claimed an elderly man hit his girlfriend with a car, when in fact there was no accident.

Investigators say on August first, Matthew Rene Brown stopped the 67 year old man at the intersection of Mission, and Chapala Streets. He claimed the man had struck his girlfriend.

They say as a precaution, the driver gave him his personal information, but that the 38 year old man then tried to extort $5,000 to keep the supposed accident from being reported to police. The victim instead went to police, who arrested the 28 year old man for attempted extortion, and elder abuse.

While arresting Brown, they also arrested his girlfriend, Alexis Flores, and took their three year old son into protective custody because they say she possessed, and was using heroin.
