A man involved in a pursuit, and a confrontation in Santa Barbara County which led to his death in an officer involved shooting is now being identified.
It happened last Thursday night, in Santa Maria. Santa Maria Police received multiple calls of someone brandishing a gun at motorists. Officer spotted the car near Mill, and School Streets, but the driver refused to stop, and led them onto Highway 101, to Guadalupe, and then back into the Santa Maria area.
The CHP deployed spike strips which stopped the car on the outskirts of the city, on Highway 1 near Black Road. Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department investigators say Robert Padilla Reyes got out of the car armed with what appeared to be a gun and confronted officers, and was shot to death by Santa Maria Police officers. It was then determined the 37 year old Santa Maria man had been brandishing a replica of a gun. No officers were hurt in the incident.
The Sheriff’s Department, and Santa Maria Police are both investigating the incident.
