An embattled police chief in Santa Barbara County has retired, two days after he was placed on paid administrative leave by the city.
Santa Maria Police Chief Danny Macagni stepped down after nine years as chief. In a short statement, city officials thanked him for his years of service to the city. They didn’t explain why he had been placed on leave.
Macagni’s tenure has been hit with controversy in recent yeras, after clases with the police officer’s union, and a no confidence vote by them.
The action comes after a rough week for the department, with two officer involved shootings.
