A pursuit, and a confrontation with an armed man has led to the second fatal officer involved shooting in Santa Barbara County in less than a week.
The latest incident began just after six last night, in Santa Maria. Santa Maria Police received multiple calls of someone brandishing a gun at motorists. Officer spotted the car near Mill, and School Streets, but the driver refused to stop, and led them onto Highway 101, then to Guadalupe, and then back into the Santa Maria area.
The CHP deployed spike strips which stopped the car on the outskirts of the city, on Highway 1 near Black Road. Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department investigators say the man got out of the car armed with what appeared to be a gun and confronted officers, and was shot to death by Santa Maria Police officers. It was then determined the man had been brandishing a replica of a gun. No officers were hurt in the incident.
The Sheriff’s Department, and Santa Maria Police are both investigating the incident. The name of the man hasn’t been released yet. Earlier this week, a Florida man who led officers on a chase in the Santa Maria area was also shot to death when he led officers on a chase, and when it ended, officers say they shot him as he tried to grab a gun.
