Santa Barbara Considers, But Delays Vote On Proposal To Name New Airport Terminal After Civic Leader

Should Santa Barbara Airport’s recently opened new terminal be named something other than the Santa Barbara Airport Terminal?

The Santa Barbara City Council looked at the issue Tuesday afternoon, after two proponents brought different proposals to officials to name the facility after some historic local civic leaders.

Some people proposed naming the terminal after former Santa City Attorney, and Mayor John Rickard. Others suggested naming it after longtime civic leader Dwight Murphy.

The Airport Commission recommended against naming the nearly year old terminal after an individual, but said if the Council wants to do so, a vetting process should be set up so all ideas can be reviewed.

The council decided to table the issue for 90 days, to let the community know about the idea of name a terminal after someone, so others can have a chance to submit possible candidates. The Council will vote on the issue in October.
