Posted on Tuesday, July 3, 2012 12:21pm

Authorities are now identifying a burglary suspect shot to death in a confrontation with Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s deputies.

Matthew Lyle Berg died after ramming his vehicle into a patrol car, and being shot by a deputy.

It started just after 12:30 yesterday afternoon, when a woman reported someone had broken into her home on the 2900 block of Highway 154, in the Santa Ynez Valley.

As deputies approached the home, they saw a man, later identified as Berg, leaving in a car. He refused to stop, and the car headed into Buellton on Highway 154, and then jumped on the southbound 101 for a short distance.

The car got off the freeway, and then got back on the freeway at Santa Rosa Road, going northbound through southbound traffic.

Burg then stopped at the freeway’s Santa Ynez River bridge. A County Sheriff’s deputy drove up to the scene, and the patrol car was rammed by the 47 year old Santa Maria man. The deputy opened fire, killing Berg.
