Authorities Investigating Death Of Man In Custody In Oxnard

Posted on Sunday, June 24, 2012 12:53pm

Authorities are investigating why a man behaving erratically became unconscious after he was restrained by Oxnard Police, and died a short time later.

Officers were called to the 1200 block of South L Street at around 10:45 Saturday night, by reports of someone overdosing on drugs.

The officers tried to calm the man, so he could be helped by firefighters, and an ambulance team at the scene.

Police say when the man refused to cooperate, officers physically restrained the 26 year old Oxnard man. After the man was handcuffed, the officers noticed the man was unconscious, and emergency medical personnel tried to revive him.

He was pronounced dead about an hour later at an Oxnard hospital. The man’s name hasn’t been released yet.

The Oxnard Police Department is investigating the death, and, as is standards practice, the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office has opened an independent investigation.
