The City of Santa Paula is embroiled in controversy, as its city manager has fired its police chief.
City Manager Jaime Fontes notified Chief Steve MacKinnon of the decision through a letter. The City Manager’s office hasn’t released details of the firing, but in the past alleged that the chief had inappropriately travelled to Arizona on personal business at the city’s expense.
MacKinnon’s attorney issued a press release says the chief was above board in his actions, and that this was a bungled case, which tried to diminish his many accomplishments for the city.
The popular police chief was put on paid administrative leave in April, pending an outside investigation. During the controversy, MacKinnon had the support of many city residents, and the city’s police officer’s association, which cited a drop in crime, and improved department morale during his seven year tenure.
