MTD To Buy Large, Two Section Buses To Try To Relieve Overcrowding On Some Routes

Posted on Thursday, May 17, 2012 2:43pm

Santa Barbara County’s Metropolitan Transit District is buying three of what will be the largest buses in use on the South Coast, to help meet the sometimes overwhelming demand on some routes.

The MTD recently tested the 62 foot long, two part “articulated” buses on some of its routes. The buses can carry 112 passengers. The buses will be used on overloaded runs between UCSB and Isla Vista, as well as from the college community to Santa Barbara. The MTD has been running extra buses on those lines at times, because of the huge demand.

MTD Directors approved the nearly two million dollar purchase, noting that while the larger buses are more expensive, over time they will save the district money because of their larger capacity.
