Ventura County could end up being a home for the Navy’s remotely controlled eyes in the sky.
The House Armed Services Committee voted to base a Navy drone program at Naval Base Ventura County, choosing it over some inland military facilities in California and Arizona.
The proposal to base the Broad Area Maritime Surveillance craft at the base still has to undergo further review, as well as full House and Senate approval. The craft would be used for maritime surveillance, and intelligence gathering.
Republican Congressman Elton Gallegly of Simi Valley has championed the proposal to base the operation in Ventura County, saying with the base’s oceanfront location, it makes the most sense of all the proposed sites.
