Santa Barbara City College is hoping to put the controversy it faced over the firing of its top official last year behind it, with the hiring a new Superintendent/President.
The Santa Barbara City College Board of Trustees last night selected Dr. Lori Gaskin for the post, after narrowing a field of dozens of applicants to four finalists. Gaskin is currently the President of West Valley College, in Saratoga, California. Before that, she was an administrator at Lake Tahoe Community College, serving in a number of capacities.
She will fill the vacancy created by last year’s termination of City College’s then Superintendent/President Andreea Serban. District trustees never fully explained the move, but it was known there were philosophical differences over management styles.
The way trustees at the time handled the suspension later drew criticism from the organization which handles accreditation of community colleges, which is requiring the board to go through educational and training programs on the board’s role in running the district.
