There was an unusual sight outside of two Ventura County hospitals yesterday. It was dozens of picketers.
Contracts are set to run out next week between some workers, and the parent company for St. John’s Regional Center in Oxnard, and St. John’s Pleasant Valley Hospital in Camarillo.
Teams of picketers were outside of the hospitals for most of the day yesterday.
Nurses, and health care workers say they’re concerned about the use of temporary contract workers, as well as the potential for layoffs.
Hospital officials say they’re seeing fewer patients, which reduces the need for workers, but some nurses contend the nurse to patient ratio is already thin at times.
The Service Employees International Union, and United Healthcare Workers West have been negotiating with Dignity Health, the parent of the two local hospitals.
