Citizens Group Expresses Support For Suspended Santa Paula Police Chief

Posted on Monday, April 23, 2012 4:21pm

A citizens group has joined Santa Paula Police officers in showing support for the city’s police chief, who was put on paid administrative leave last week.

An organization calling itself Citizens Supporting Chief Steve MaKinnon is asking for a special City Council meeting, saying it’s troubled, and puzzled that he was put on paid administrative leave. The action was taken by City Manager Jaime Fontes last Tuesday. Because it’s a personnel matter, city officials aren’t commenting on the action.

The citizens group says the chief has helped drop the crime rate in the city, while boosting the morale of officers. The group says if it’s not possible to hold a special meeting, they hope the issue will get a full airing at the next scheduled council meeting, which is set for May 7th.

Santa Paula Police Sergeant Ish Cordero has been named interim chief.

MacKinnon has been the city’s police chief since November of 2005.
