Ojai has given final approval to an ordinance banning single use plastic bags at stores in the city.
The Ojai City Council this week gave final approval to the ordinance, which also includes a ten cent per bag charge for customers who want paper bags. The fee will go to the stores, to cover the costs of the paper bags.
The single use plastic bag ban exempts restaurants.
Ojai is the first city in the county to pass an ordinance of this type. It’s set to take effect July first.
Calabasas already has a similar ordinance in place. Carpinteria recently passed even tougher restrictions, which ban plastic bag use by restaurants as well as stores, and is being sued by a plastic bag industry backed group over that part of its ordinance.
