Santa Barbara County authorities say a popular South Coast beach will be closed this weekend, to try to prevent a massive beach party from taking place.
The Santa Barbara County Community Services Department says Isla Vista’s beaches will be closed on Saturday, because of the potential for a “Floatopia” event.
In 2009, an unsponsored, unsanctioned party advertised through social media called “Floatopia” drew an estimated 12,000 partygoers to the beach at Isla Vista, overwhelming public safety and sanitation resources.
A number of people needed emergency medical treatment due to alcohol poisoning, and tons of garbage was left behind on the beach.
Officials say Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s deputies will enforce the closure this weekend.
