The commission which accredits community and junior colleges has reprimanded Santa Barbara City College for the role, and performance of its Board of Trustees in 2010, and 2011.
The Accrediting Commission for Community, and Junior Colleges put SBCC on what it calls “Warning” status. The status means while the commission is concerned about the institution’s ability to meet standards, the accredited status of the institution continues.
The Commission’s action against the colleges comes over the trustees controversial removal from office, and in effect the firing of Superintendent/President Andreea Serban last year. Trustees never fully explained the action to the public, but it was known there were conflicts over management styles.
The Commission is calling on the Board of Trustees to undergo training on its role in managing the college district, and how it should handle future evaluations of the Superintendent/President. It also says the board needs to re-direct its focus to insure that it is working in the best interests of the college’s mission.
