It was a spectacular sight, visible throughout much of our region this afternoon.
A Delta Four rocket carrying a spy satellite lifted off from Vandenberg Air Force Base, in Santa Barbara County just after four p.m.
The launch had originally been set for last week, but was delayed over technical issues.
No problems were reported during the televised launch, but because the mission is classified, the public broadcast was discontinued less than five minutes after the 4:12 p.m. liftoff.
The payload was being launched into orbit for the National Reconnaissance Office, which develops and manages U.S. spy satellites.
