A Ventura County Grand Jury report asserts that the City of Thousand Oaks may be charging an unreasonable vehicle impound fee.
In the wake of controversy over impound fees in other communities, the Grand Jury decided to examine the subject in Ventura County. The report says there is a wide disparity of administrative fees charged in the county, from $11 to $300, but that with the exception of Thousand Oaks, the fees seem to be justified to cover costs. It’s calling for the cities, and the county to meet to come up with a standardized fee structure.
The report is also calling for a review of the $300 fee charged by the City of Thousand Oaks. The money is used to pay for “Start Smart” driving classes, but the report questions the approach, saying it conflicts with the vehicle code. The Grand Jury is calling for the city to review the legality of using vehicle release fees for driver education programs.
