The U.S. Department Of Homeland Security now has 14 people in custody, who were rescued from a boat which apparently had engine failure off the Santa Barbara County coastline.
A cargo ship spotted the stranded boat yesterday morning, near Point Conception.
A Coast Guard cutter rescued the people, which included children, and took them to Santa Barbara Harbor, where they were handed over to Homeland Security officers.
Officials say smugglers were trying to land the people in the United States illegally.
