Santa Barbara County Community To Look At Increasing Bed Tax

Posted on Thursday, March 22, 2012 1:35am

A South Coast city has hired a consulting firm to do research on whether voters might support an increase in the community’s bed tax,a move which could potentially raise close to a million dollars a year.

The Goleta City Council is looking at whether it should ask voters to approve increasing the city’s transient occupancy tax from 10 percent, to 12 percent.

The tax is the one paid by visitors when they stay in a hotel room.

Hotel, and tourism officials are concerned about the proposal, and want to know how the city would use the money.

They’re suggesting that since the money comes from visitors, at least some of it should be used for promoting tourism.

The council says it will use the results of the $20,000 study to help determine whether they’ll take the idea to voters.
