A Santa Barbara caregiver is accused of stealing more than $50,000 from the account of a 71 year old man she was supposed to be helping.

Santa Barbara Police say they received a call from a bank that the victim had come into one of their branches, and reported that a caregiver had been stealing from him.  The victim said there were six unauthorized ATM transactions, and four unauthorized checks.

Detectives say further investigation showed that between October of 2010, and January of 2012, Sarah Helen Benson stole more than $53,000 from the Mesa resident thru ATM transactions, or fraudulent checks.  Benson had worked for the victim for a few years, and had apparently earned his trust.

The 21 year old woman is facing embezzlement, forgery, and financial elder abuse by a caregiver charges.
