Local University To Honor Civil Rights Leader, Model/Businesswoman With Honorary Degrees

A Ventura University has announced plans to honor a diverse pair of people at its commencement ceremonies this year, ranging from a civil rights leader, to a supermodel turned businesswoman.

Cal State Channel Islands will award an honorary degree to Hank Lacayo, who was a top official with the United Auto Workers, but march for civil rights with Dr. Martin Luther King Junior, and Cesar Chavez.

The Newbury Park resident helped create community support for the creation of Cal State Channel Islands.

The University will also honor Kathy Ireland with an honorary degree.

The Santa Barbara woman used her fame as a model to became a businesswoman, and then create a non-profit organization which has raised millions for causes like child health, women’s rights, and HIV/AIDS programs.
