A Carpinteria City Councilman who’s been under fire since a DUI arrest last year says he won’t attend a council meeting tonight, where council members are set to consider censuring him.

In a statement released this afternoon, Joe Armendariz says he’s thinking his colleagues should make whatever decision they will make without his participation.

The councilman says since the December 2nd accident, he’s been working to recover from what he calls his addiction to alcohol.

He says he’s been a regular participant in Alcoholics Anonymous meetings.

Some residents have called for him to resign, but he says he believes he can contribute to the city for the rest of his term.

Armendariz has already announced he won’t seek re-election after his term expires this year.
