A Santa Barbara filmmaker known around the world for his work on nature documentaries has died in an Australian helicopter accident.
Mike deGruy and another man died in the crash of a helicopter taking off from an airfield near Jervis Bay, in New South Wales Saturday afternoon. Officials there say they were working on a documentary.
deGruy has travelled the world to produce documentaries for the BBC, the National Geographic Channel, and other outlets. He dived in subs under both poles, and visited the wreck of the Titanic. In Santa Barbara, he was well known for his involvement in projects like the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, and the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum.
Australian officials are trying to determine what led to the accident.
deGruy was 60 years old.
