Work could start by the end of the month to remove tons of sand in front of, and against homes in a Ventura beachfront community.
The sand in the Pierpont area was the focus of a legal battle between the City of Ventura, and homeowners.
The City had contended it was limited in its ability to remove the sand from a strip of land it owns in front of the homes by State Coastal Commission regulations.
Residents sued, saying the sand had built up to dangerous levels, covering walkways and even windows of some of the properties.
The courts sided with the residents, leading to a settlement.
This week, the city awarded a more than half million dollar contract to a Carpinteria company to begin the project, which has to be completed before June.
A biologist will be on hand to preserve native plants impacted by the sand removal project.
