Bishop With Ventura Counties Ties Resigns After Admitting Fathering Children

Posted on Wednesday, January 4, 2012 5:59pm

A bishop who once served in the Catholic Church in Ventura County has resigned, after church officials say he admitted violated his vows of celibacy, and fathered two now teenage children.

The archbishop of the Los Angeles Archdiocese says the church will provide support for the teens fathered by Bishop Gabino Zavala.

Bishops normally serve until they are 75, but can retire early if they are sick, or unfit for office.

Zavala is 60 years old.

Zavala attended St. John’s Seminary in Camarillo, and became its rector in the 1990’s.
