Santa Barbara Man Convicted Of Killing Brother, And Brother’s Girlfriend Over Financial Dispute

Posted on Wednesday, December 21, 2011 3:26pm

A Santa Barbara man has been convicted today (12/21) of killing his brother, and his brother’s girlfriend over a financial dispute.

A Santa Barbara County Superior Court jury deliberated for less than a full day before finding Corey Lyons guilty of two counts of first degree murder for the deaths of Daniel Lyons, and Barbara Scharton.

Prosecutors say Lyons broke into his brother’s Santa Barbara Mesa home, and shot the couple to death.

They say that Corey Lyons had lost a lawsuit to his brother over a home construction dispute, and the May, 2009 day the killings occurred, Corey was supposed to hand over much of his assets to Daniel.

This was the third trial for Lyons, with the first two ending in mistrials.

He’s set to be formally sentenced in February, but based on the convictions, along with the enhancements of lying in wait, and killing for financial gain, prosecutors say Lyons will face the rest of his life in prison without the possibility of parole.
