Off Duty Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy Driver Of SUV Which Crashed Into Fillmore Starbucks, Killing One

Posted on Wednesday, December 14, 2011 11:43am

An off-duty Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputy has been identified as the driver of an SUV which veered out of control in Fillmore, and smashed into a coffee shop, killing one person, and injuring two others.

It happened around 7 last night.

Ventura County Sheriff’s Department officials say that Michael Cedarland was westbound on Highway 126 when he lost control of his vehicle, and it veered across two lanes of traffic, over some curbs, and across a parking lot before plunging into a Starbucks.

The vehicle pinned 30 year old Sergio Mendez against a wall.  It took firefighters about ten minutes to free the Fillmore man, who later died at a hospital.  Two other people in the Starbucks suffered minor injuries.

The SUV’s driver was unhurt.

Investigators say it’s unclear what led to the crash, but that neither drugs nor alcohol appear to have been factors.
