Hospital In Ventura County One of 14 Fined Statewide Over Medical Procedure Mistakes

Posted on Friday, December 9, 2011 12:26pm

The State Department of Public Health says the Ventura County Medical Center is one of 14 facilities statewide which have been fined over serious problems with medical procedures.

State officials say the $50,000 fine stems from a 2009 surgery in which a surgical towel was left inside a patient’s abdomen following an operation, causing illness, and forcing a second surgery to remove it.

$850,000 in fines were assessed statewide against the 14 facilities for similar types of serious errors.  The medical center says it’s taken a serious of steps to insure a similar problem doesn’t occur again.
