A defense contractor with a factory in Ventura County has announced plans to shut down the facility, and lay off the majority of its more than 200 workers.
ITT Exelis made devices at its Thousand Oaks facility which could could jam cell phone signals used to detonate improvised explosive devices. The jamming devices were heavily used in Iraq, but as U.S. operations scaled down there, so did orders for the electronics.
ITT says it will phase out the facility starting next spring. About a fifth of the workers will be offered jobs at the company’s facility in Van Nuys, but around 170 are expected to receive layoff notices.
