Hunters Safe After Helicopter Rescue In Los Padres National Forest

Posted on Monday, November 28, 2011 12:59am

Two hunters have quite a story to tell this morning, after becoming stranded at night on a cliff in a remote area of the Los Padres National Forest, and being rescued by helicopter.

It happened Saturday night, in the vicinity of the Hard Luck Campground, near Piru Creek in the Lockwood Valley area.  The hunters were well equipped with outdoor gear, cell phones, and even a GPS, but lost the trail they were on after dark.  The hunters called for help on a cell phone, but the signal was spotty.  Aftert Ventura County Sheriff’s deputies failed to find the men, one of the department’s helicopters was called out to help.

The men had become trapped on the face of a cliff.  Phone contact was reestablished, and the helicopter crew was able to use night vision goggles to spot the cell phone light.  The chopper used its hoist to lower a rope 100 feet to lift the men to safety.  They were unhurt.
