Authorities Release Name Of Man Shot By Port Hueneme Police In Confrontation

Authorities now say a man they call a documented gang member was the person who tried to run down a Port Hueneme police officer, and was shot by the officer in self defense.

It happened at around 10 p.m. Saturday.  The officer was on routine patrol, and  tried to stop a vehicle he suspected was stolen.  The vehicle stopped on the 900 block of Redwood Street, in Oxnard.  The officer got out of the patrol car, but said the vehicle then sped towards him, and he opened fire.

18-year-old Jose Luis Ramirez was hit, and critically wounded.  Oxnard Police, who are handling the investigation because the shooting occured in Oxnard, confirmed the vehicle had been reported stolen.
