A Ventura County Supervisor is trying to take away what he sees as costly perks for part time government officials, like city council members.
County Supervisor Peter Foy filed paperwork in Sacramento for a statewide initiative which would ban health benefits, pensions, or other benefits for part time officials like council members, school board members, and special district board members.
If passed, the only allowable benefit would be a salary for the part time officials.
In a written statement, the Simi Valley based supervisor said it was time to end costly perks, and cut what he called full time benefits for part time service.
In one example, eight of Ventura County’s ten cities currently provide health care benefits for council members
Supporters of the initiative would have to gather more than 800,000 signatures to qualify it for the November, 2012 ballot.
