Navy Announces Plans To Decommission Seabee Battalion Based In Ventura County

Posted on Friday, September 30, 2011 7:54am

As part of a cost cutting move by the Defense Department, the U.S. Navy has announced plans to decommission two of its Seabee battalions, including one based in Ventura County.

Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 40 will be decommissioned next summer, after completing a deployment in the Pacific.

The unit’s more than 580 members will be transferred to other units, with some opting to leave the navy, or retire.  The move could mean the loss of hundreds of jobs at Naval Base Ventura County.

The Port Hueneme based unit, known as the “Fighting Forty”, dates back to the beginnings of the Seabees history, during World War Two. The unit’s deployments include Vietnam, the Mideast, Somalia, and the southern U.S. following Hurricane Katrina.

The other Seabee unit being decommissioned is based in Mississippi.
