Santa Barbara County Reluctantly Approves Plan For County Takeover Of Management Of Some Convicts

Posted on Wednesday, September 21, 2011 10:32am

Santa Barbara County has reluctantly approved a plan to deal with hundreds of California prison inmates who would in the past go to state prisons, but will now be the county’s responsibility, as part of the state’s efforts to deal with massive prison overcrowding.  Instead of going to state prison, non-violent, non-sex offenders convicted in the future in Santa Barbara County of crimes like grand theft will stay in the county.  KCLU’s Lance Orozco reports county officials are worried about the financial and safety implications, but say they have no choice as the result of state legislation.
