Biologists Say Sea Lions Responsible For Rash Of Pelican Deaths On Central Coast

Posted on Wednesday, August 31, 2011 8:38pm

The State Department of Fish And Game says it’s determined that sea lions are behind a rash of dead, and injured pelicans found along the San Luis Obispo County coastline.

A number of California Brown pelicans have been found with puncture wound injuries, including some fatal ones.  Biologists say a glut of bait fish in some coastal areas has attracted the pelicans to sea lion habitat.  They say the birds are being attacked if they get in the way of feeding sea lions.

More than two dozen dead, and injured birds have been found on Central Coast beaches in recent weeks.
