Governor Jerry Brown has signed contentious legislation that requires California schools to teach students about the contributions of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Americans. The new law will affect social science textbooks statewide as well as the curriculum at individual schools.

Democratic Senator Mark Leno, who is openly gay, wrote the bill. “It’s very exciting and we’re really pleased to have the Governor’s support on this historic bill, the first of its kind in the nation,” he said. “We hope that as California is leading the way once again, we hope that other states will follow.”

In a statement, Governor Brown said “history should be honest.” He called the law an important step forward for the state.

The bill was opposed by many Republicans, who argued it was agenda-driven. Randy Thomasson with the conservative group “SaveCalifornia-dot-com” calls the legislation “sexual brainwashing.” He encourages parents to remove their kids from public schools.
