Trial Set To Start For Ventura County Teen Accused Of Killing Classmate In Hate Crime

Posted on Tuesday, July 5, 2011 12:50am

Opening statements are set to get underway Tuesday (7/5) in the trial of a Ventura County high school student accused of shooting to death a classmate, in what prosecutors have called a hate crime.

Brandon McInerney is accused of the February, 2008 shooting death of Larry King at E.O. Green Junior High School in Oxnard. The now 17 year old teen is facing first degree murder charges, and is being tried as an adult.

Prosecutors say a hate crime charge in the case stems from King’s admission to classmates he was gay, and their assertion it was a factor in the killing.

The case was moved to Chatsworth by a Ventura County Superior Court judge, who sought to find jurors who hadn’t been influenced by pretrial publicity.
