A new Ventura County Grand Jury report says no one agency is compiling information, and statistics on school bus safety in the county, and is calling on the County Office of Education to take on the task. The report says no one is even sure exactly how many kids in the county’s 21 school districts ride busses, although its unofficial estimate is just over 16,000 daily. The report notes that from what it was able to piece together, there were 41 accidents, and four injuries due to school bus accidents in the 2009-2010 school year. The Grand Jury says it found some of the local school district have statistics, and other information readily available, while others do not.
The study does say that school bus safety nationwide overall is good, with the average student in a bus less likely to be in a traffic accident than if he or she were in a private vehicle.
