Environmental Groups Pursue Legal Action To Try To Limit Ship Speeds Off California, To Protect Whales

Posted on Monday, June 6, 2011 2:25pm

A coalition of environmental groups filed a legal petition to try to lower ship speeds in California’s coastal sanctuaries, to try to prevent strikes against whales.  The Santa Barbara County based Environmental Defense Center, along with three other groups took the the action Monday (6/6).  The petition seeks to establish a ten knot speed limit for ships in sanctuaries off the California Coast.    The coalition contends that more than 50 blue whales have been killed by ship strikes off the California coastline in the last decade. The petition seeks to have  federal agencies impose the speed limit.
