An alternative to Governor Jerry Brown’s proposal to eliminate California redevelopment agencies has stalled in a Senate committee after a long debate.
The bill’s author, Democrat Rod Wright, says it would stop some of the abuses that led to the governor’s call for elimination – while still preserving a critical economic development tool for local governments.
But committee members are holding the bill because they believe the future of redevelopment agencies will be negotiated as part of a budget deal.
Governor Brown has said that redevelopment funds ought to be re-prioritized during this budget crisis – and would be better used by schools, cities and counties.
